Bora Dağtekin was born in Hannover on October 27th 1978. He studied screenwriting at the Ludwigsburg film school, and during that time, he already wrote scripts for TV series like "Meine schönsten Jahre" and "Schulmädchen". In 2006, he finished his thesis, an action movie adaptation of Friedrich Schiller's classic play "Die Räuber". Also in 2006, he provided the screenplay for the comedy "Wo ist Fred?" ("Where is Fred?") starring Til Schweiger and Jürgen Vogel.
Dağtekin had his breakthrough as head writer for the acclaimed sitcom "Türkisch für Anfänger" (2005-2008). In 2007 and 2009, he won the Grimme Award for his work on the show. In 2007, he and Steffi Ackermann developed the sitcom "Doctor's Diary", which won him the 2008 German Television Award, the 2009 Grimme Award and the 2009 Bavarian Television Award. Dağtekin also wrote the TV feature films "Eine wie keiner" and "Undercover Love".
Bora Dağtekin made his debut as director with the 2012 feature film version of "Türkisch für Anfänger", which he also wrote. The following year, he wrote and directed the comedy "Fack Ju Göhte" ("Suck Me Shakespeer"), which stars Elyas M'Barek as a petty criminal who has to pose as a substitute teacher while searching for his hidden loot. The film was an overwhelming box office success, won several awards and was followed by the equally successful sequel "Fack Ju Göhte 2".
Another two years later, in October 2017, "Fack Ju Göhte 3" ("Suck Me Shakespeer 3") was released in German cinemas, which, with well over six million viewers, was another enormous box office success. The comedy won the Audience Award at the Bavarian Film Prize.
In January 2019, Dagtekin began shooting "Das perfekte Geheimnis", a remake of the Italian comedy "Perfetti Sconosciuti" ("Perfect Strangers") from 2016, about seven friends who, in the course of an evening together, decide to answer all incoming phone calls over loudspeaker and read out text and WhatsApp messages aloud - leading to some revelations and conflicts. The high-calibre cast film was released in cinemas in October 2019. With over 5.1 million viewers, it was the most successful German film of the year. At the Bavarian Film Awards 2020, "Das perfekte Geheimnis" was awarded Best Production.
In March/April 2023, Bora Dagtekin's next feature film, "Chantal im Märchenland", a spin-off of "Fack ju Göthe", was filmed, to be released one year later, in March 2024.
