Biography

Paula Knüpling was born on January 4, 1995 in Berlin. She made her acting debut at the age of eleven with a small role in Dani Levy's satire "Mein Führer - Die wirklich wahrste Wahrheit über Adolf Hitler" ("My Führer - The Truly Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler") as the daughter of Ulrich Mühe's character. Further roles followed in Vanessa Jopp's "Meine schöne Bescherung" ("Messy Christmas", 2007), Julie Delpy's "Die Gräfin" ("The Countess", 2008) and as the seriously ill daughter of the main character (Iris Berben) in Carlo Rola's Simmel adaptation "Niemand ist eine Insel" (2011); in Karola Hattop's Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale film "Die Schneekönigin" (DE/FI 2014) she had a leading role as a princess. In 2014, Paula Knüpling graduated from high school.

Over the next few years, Knüpling successfully made the transition from child actress to adult roles. She was part of the ensemble of the "Tatort" episode "Wofür es sich zu leben lohnt" (2015) and the feature film "Der lange Sommer der Theorie" ("The Long Summer of Theory", 2017), among others. In 2017, she played a leading role in Thomas Helm's "Heute oder morgen" ("Before We Grow Old"), about three close friends whose carefree, sensual lives in Berlin are thrown off course by an unwanted pregnancy. The movie was released in 2019.

In 2018, Knüpling founded the theater production company cmd+c with her partner Marina Prados. Since then, the two have worked as a directing duo in Berlin's independent theater scene, including at the P14 youth theater at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and at Ballhaus Ost. There, in 2021, they staged the play "Ladybitch – Ein Theaterabend über den Untergang Franz Kramers", which deals with abuse of power and sexual harassment in the (stage) workplace and is based on the couple's personal experiences.

Prados and Knüpling made their joint film directing debut with the adaptation of this material under the title "Ladybitch". At the Max Ophüls Preis 2022 Film Festival, "Ladybitch" was awarded the "Prize for the Socially Relevant Film". At the Achtung Berlin Film it received the award for Best Feature Film and at the TeleVisionale Film and Series Festival 2022 it received the MFG Star. In March 2023 "Ladybitch" was released theatrically.
