Gro Swantje Kohlhof was born on 2nd of September 1994 in Hamburg. She discovered her passion for acting at a very young age. In 2005 she started taking acting lessons at the Theaterschule Zeppelin in Hamburg (which she continued till 2012). He television debut was in 2007 with a minor role in an episode of the series "Die Pfefferkörner". In 2010 she was cast in the TV-thriller "Wolfsfährte" (Director: Urs Egger), where she played the victim of a psychopath kidnapper. Her cinematic debut was as a minor role in the coming-of-age film "Der Himmel hat vier Ecken" ("The Sky Has Four Corners", 2011).
A key role in Kohlhof’s career was that of a sadistic man’s daughter in the drama "Tore tanzt" ("Nothing Bad Can Happen", 2013). The film was about a family that admits a young "Jesus-Freak" into their home and systematically starts torturing him until his eventual death. For her role in this film she was prized with the best actress award in the "Next Wave" category at the Fantastic Fest in Austin.
In 2014 Kohlhof started her acting studies at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). In the same year Kohlhof got a supporting role in the highly praized and prize winning drama "Wir sind jung. Wir sind stark." ("We Are Young. We Are Strong") which premiered at the Hof International Film Festival. Kohlhof’s role in the film was that of a young clique member, that took part in the attack of a refugee center in August 1992.
Gro Swantje Kohlhof’s breakthrough, which happened when she was still at university, was her leading role in the "Tatort" episode "Die Wiederkehr" (2015, Director: Florian Baxmeyer), where she took on the role of a secretive youngster, that supposedly went missing for ten years as a child. In January 2016 she took part in another "Tatort" episode "Rebecca", where she played a traumatized kidnapping victim. For this role she won the Günter-Strack-Fernsehpreis and was nominated for the New Faces Award. On top of this Kohlhof was also in the cast for the mystery-drama "Wir sind die Flut" (2016) and the TV movie "Familie ist kein Wunschkonzert" (2016).
Parallel to her studies she also took part in several stage production including ones at the bat Studiotheater Berlin, Theater Discounter Berlin and in the "Box" of the Deutsches Theater. After graduating from the UdK in January 2018 she became a permanent member of the Munich Kammerspiele ensemble, where she took part in many plays including "King Lear", "Melancholia", "Macbeth" and "Jedem das Seine".
In the cinematic feature "Endzeit" ("Ever After", Director: Carolina Hellsgård), a feminist zombie film, she had another leading role. The film premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in the fall of 2018 and was released in german cinemas in August 2019.
In February 2020, she was awarded the Young Actor Award of the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF) for her performance in the HFF graduation film "Eigenbedarf" by Julius Grimm.
