Biography

Voodoo Jürgens (real name: David Öllerer) was born on August 2, 1983 in Tulln on the Danube, Austria. After graduating from school, he began an apprenticeship as a pastry chef at the renowned Demel confectionery, which he did not complete. He also dropped out of college early. Instead, he devoted himself to music and occasionally worked as a cemetery gardener.

In 2004, Öllerer was the co-founder and lead singer of the garage rock band Die Eternias, which gained some fame in and around Vienna for their eccentric stage outfits and unique arrangements. For the release of their two albums, the band members adopted new pseudonyms, with Öllerer's final stage name being Voodoo Jürgens, a play on the name of the famous German pop singer Udo Jürgens.

After the group disbanded in 2014, Öllerer retained the stage name and embarked on a solo career as a singer-songwriter, characterized by his darkly humorous lyrics in Viennese dialect. Musically, he is associated with the Austropop genre. His debut album, "Ansa Woar" (2016), reached number 1 on the Austrian charts. His subsequent albums, "'S klane Glücksspiel" (2019) and "Wie die Nocht noch jung wor" (2022), also reached the top 5.

In 2018, Jürgens made a guest appearance as himself in the "Tatort" episode "Her mit der Marie!" As an actor, he played supporting roles in the Greek-Austrian production "Animal" (2023) and as a troubadour in the unconventional Austrian provincial study "Ein schöner Ort" ("A Good Place", 2023). Author and director Adrian Goiginger cast Jürgens in 2022 in the leading role of a street musician in the tragicomedy "Rickerl - Musik is höchstens a Hobby" (AT/DE). The premiere took place at the Hamburg Film Festival in 2023, the German theatrical release was in February 2024.
