Biography

Matthias Ditscherlein, born in 1988 in Rodewisch in the Vogtland region, gained his first film experiences at a young age. He told the Saxony Film Association in 2017: "From my confirmation money, I bought a mini DV camera, which my mate and I experimented with a lot. I've been interested in filmmaking all along, but I wasn't really sure yet if it could be a profession for me." After completing high school and community service, he first worked with Vogtland Regional Television (VRF).

In 2011, he began studying in the then newly opened dual degree program in television production with a special focus on journalism, at FAM in Leipzig. He soon specialized in the field of documentary film. He made his debut with the 25-minute "Das Glück da unten" (2012, with Dagmar Borchert), about four women who worked in the mining industry in the post-war period. The idea for his first feature-length documentary came to Ditscherlein in Izmir, Turkey, where he was asked to do a film project on the topic of "Common Future" as part of a European Voluntary Service. This resulted in "Hadi Tschüss" (2015, together with Anne Denkinger and Sarah Klare), in which five young German-Turkish women tell of their lives between the two cultures. The post-production in Germany was financed through crowdfunding.

He then realized three music documentaries: "Deutscher Evangelischer Posaunentag" (2016), "Bläserfest zum Kirchentag" (2017) and the 25-minute "Bavarabica" (2018), about the tour of the Bavarian family band Unterbiberger Hofmusik through the Arab world. In 2019, Ditscherlein began work on the documentary "Kinomann - Von einem der einfach weiter macht," in which he follows Germany's longest-serving mobile projectionist and cinema maker in his 60th anniversary year. After its premiere at the Hofer Filmtage 2020, the film was released in German cinemas in the summer of 2021.
