Biography

Born in Milan on 11.5.1928, he made his directorial debut in 1958. In 1973 he received the FIPRESCI award for his satire "La Grande Bouffe" which brought him considerable international fame. His provocative oeuvre includes films such as "Bye Bye Monkey" (which received the Jury Award in Cannes in 1978) and "Tales of Ordinary Madness" which won the David di Donatello Award in 1982. In 1991 he received the Golden Bear for "The House of Smiles". He died in Paris on 9.5.1997.
