Biography

Julianna Ugrin was born in Hungary in 1980. She graduated from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest and started working at the Budapest production company Flora Film International in 2005. In 2009 she was selected for the Eurodoc Producers Workshop and from March 2009 she worked at the German company Havas Films as a producer and production manager. In 2011, she co-organized the first meeting of Eurodoc in Budapest.   

In the same year, Ugrin founded the production company Eclipse Film, with which she launched numerous documentaries. Alongside this, in 2013 she began teaching at the Hungarian Film Academy in the field of documentary film, organizing master classes, summer schools and workshops.  

"The Next Guardian" (2017), a documentary she produced about an ordinary teenager who is chosen to lead a Buddhist monastery in Bhutan, won the Best Documentary Award at the Zsigmond Vilmos Film Festival in Szeged, Hungary. An even bigger success was "Eine gefangene Frau" ("A Woman Captured", HU/DE 2017), which tells about modern slavery in Europe based on true events. The film won awards at numerous international festivals, including the goEast Film Festival in Wiesbaden, the Crossing Europe Film Festival Linz and the Boston Global Cinema Film Festival.  

In 2019, Julianna Ugrin began shooting her own directorial debut with Márton Vízkelety: "Vater Unser" ("Our Father", DE/HU), a long-term portrait about the priest of a Hungarian village who secretly has a wife and three children in the neighboring village. The film was released in June 2022.
