Biography

Julia Franz Richter, born in Vienna in 1991, studied Comparative Literature at the University of Vienna from 2010 to 2012. In the fall of 2012, she began her acting studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, which she successfully completed in 2016. During her studies she appeared in various theater productions, including roles at the Schauspielhaus Graz in "The Taming of the Shrew", "Johnny Breitwieser" and "Kasimir and Karoline". In 2016, she played the role of Hermia in a production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" directed by Michael Sturminger at the Perchtoldsdorf Summer Theater Festival.

From 2016 to 2018, Richter was a member of the ensemble at the Munich Volkstheater, where she appeared in various productions such as "Medea", "Understanding Jihadism in Eight Steps" and the premiere of "Dogtown Munich". During this time, she also worked in her first television and film productions. In 2017, she had a central role as a police cadet in the "Tatort" crime film "Wehrlos" and played the lead role in the eight-part family drama series "Trakehnerblut" from May 2017. In this series, she portrayed a young woman who unexpectedly inherits a stud farm. Julia Franz Richter was nominated for a Romy Award in the category "Best Young Actress" for her work in this series.

In 2018, she portrayed the free-spirited Carla in a central supporting role, a character the female lead falls in love with, in Katharina Mückstein's Austrian coming-of-age drama "L'Animale." The ensemble received the Best Actor award at the Diagonale that same year. In 2020, she received the Best Actress award at the Diagonale for her lead role in the drama "Der Taucher," about an 18-year-old (Franz Richter) and her mother, a close relationship that is challenged when the mother's ex-partner reappears. Before that, in 2019, she appeared in a tragic supporting role in "Evas letzter Gang," the final installment of the long-running and award-winning crime series "Unter Verdacht" with Senta Berger

At the same time, Franz Richter continued her work as a stage actress. After her time at the Munich Volkstheater, she was once again an ensemble member at the Schauspielhaus Graz in 2018 and 2019, appearing in productions such as "Lulu - A Murder Ballad," "Miss Julie," "Heldenplatz" and "The Physicists." From the 2020/21 season, she will be a member of the ensemble at the Vienna Volkstheater until 2022.

Christian Petzold cast her in a supporting role in his love drama "Undine", which premiered at the Berlinale in 2020. This was followed by appearances in a music video for the Austrian rock band Wanda and a leading role as an investigating police officer in the Austrian TV movie "Vier" from the "Landkrimi" series. She also played several key roles in cinema productions, including the soldier Hannah Wagner in the lead role of the science fiction film "Rubikon", as the best friend of the main character, a supermarket cashier and mermaid enthusiast in Franziska Pflaum's "Mermaids Don't Cry" (both AT, 2022), and in 2023 she starred in the film adaptation of Robert Seethaler's bestseller "Ein ganzes Leben" ("A Whole Life") as the great but tragic love interest of the main character, worker Andreas Egger.
