Corinna Belz studied philosophy, art history and media studies in Cologne, Zurich and Berlin. As author, director and producer, she was involved in numerous TV and film productions. Among her works are the documentaries "Die wirklichen Dinge passieren in der Nacht" (1992, co-directed by Marion Kollbach), "Leben nach Microsoft" (2001, co-directed by Regina Schilling), "Ein anderes Amerika" (2002) – which was nominated for a Grimme Award – and "Drei Wünsche" (2004). In 2009, she collaborated with other prolific directors on the extensive documentary project "24h Berlin".
After already having portrayed seminal artist Gerhard Richter in the award-winning "Das Kölner Domfenster" (2007), she again focused on the world famous painter in her feature-length documentary "Gerhard Richter – Painting", which was released in September 2011 and won the Deutscher Filmpreis 2012 as Best Documentary. For SWR/Arte she produced "Ema auf der Treppe - Gerhard Richter 1966" (2012). Also for Arte, she produced the four-part series "Ateliergespräche mit Kasper König" (2015). In addition, she was involved in "24h Jerusalem" (2014), a 24-hour real-time television documentary about Jerusalem and its inhabitants; "24h Bayern - ein Tag Heimat", the same format focusing on Bavaria, followed in 2017.
In 2016, Belz presented her documentary feature "Peter Handke - Bin im Wald. Kann sein, dass ich mich verspäte", a portrait of the award-winning but controversial author. The film was nominated for the Grimme Award and the Bavarian Film Award.
Also in 2016, Belz was commissioned by the Kölner Philharmonie and the Ensemble Musikfabrik to produce the 32-minute film "Richters Patterns" on the occasion of their 25th anniversary, alluding to Gerhard Richter's artist book "Patterns. Divided-Mirrored-Repeated". The following year, Richter and Belz developed the experimental film "Moving Picture (946-3)," for which composer Steve Reich composed the piece "Reich/Richter". The premiere took place in New York in April 2019. Further screenings, some with compositions by Rebecca Saunders, followed, for example in 2020 at Tholey Abbey on the occasion of the inauguration of Gerhard Richter's church windows.
From 2018 to 2020, Corinna Belz made the documentary "In den Uffizien" ("Inside the Uffizi") in Florence (together with Enrique Sanchez Lansch), about the work behind the scenes of the world-famous art collection. The film premiered in 2021, during the COVID pandemic, as part of the DOK.fest @home in Munich and was theatrically released in November 2021.
As of 2019, Corinna Belz has taken on an associate professorship for documentary film at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.
The documentary "Thomas Schütte - Ich bin nicht allein" ("Thomas Schütte – I Am Not Alone"), a portrait of the artist and his numerous collaborators, had its world premiere at the Munich DOK.fest in 2023. The film was theatrically released in June 2023.
