Tim Ellrich was born 1989 in Osnabrück. As a teenager, he worked at a cinema and, after various internships in film production, moved to Vienna, where he studied theater, film, and media studies as well as philosophy.
Beginning in 2012, he directed several short films, including the 6-minute "Die Ausgestoßenen" ("The Outcasts," AT/DE, 2014), which earned awards at multiple festivals. His 13-minute short film "Die Badewanne" ("The Bathtub," AT/DE, 2015) received the Short Film Award at the Baden-Württemberg Filmschau in 2016 and the Jury Prize at the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France the same year, followed by numerous other festival selections and accolades.
In 2014, Ellrich began studying Directing at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, where he continued making short films that screened internationally. His feature-length debut came with the documentary "Mein Vietnam" ("Losing Vietnam," 2020), which tells the story of a Vietnamese couple who have lived in Germany for 30 years yet remain deeply connected to their homeland. The film won the Best Documentary Award at the First Steps Awards.
In 2022, he shot his graduation film "Im Haus meiner Eltern" ("In My Parents' House") in Halle and his hometown of Osnabrück. The autobiographical family drama premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in early 2025, where it received the Tiger Special Jury Award. Its German theatrical release followed in April 2025.
