Summary
Loosely based on the autobiography of the same title by Deborah Feldman, the 4-part miniseries tell the story of Esther Shapiro, a young woman from a New York Hasidic community who has to enter into an arranged marriage whose primary purpose is procreation. The marriage is not under a good star because of an absence of pregnancy and the suspicious observation by her surroundings. Thus Esther decides to leave her current life, which is marked by strict rules, and to find a new freedom in Berlin - just as her estranged mother had done years before. Arriving in the German capital more or less penniless, she not only meets her mother again, but also makes friends with a group of students at the Berlin Music Academy. Soon she hopes to be able to take up studies there as well. It does not take long, however, before her husband Yanky and his cousin Moishe, who have also travelled to Berlin in search of Esther and with the intention of bringing her back to New York, get on her trail.
