Summary
Young Simon lives with his loving parents near Goteborg. His father, a faithful worker, already has planned for his son to follow in his footsteps and to become a craftsman as well. Yet, Simon is much more interested in books than in tools. These different worldviews lead to conflicts, since Simon feels misunderstood and estranged from his family. Only while sitting secluded in the top of a giant oak tree is he able to pursue his daydreams uninterrupted.
Unlike his father, Simon's mother supports her son's ambitions and tries to foster his talents. Thanks to her effort, Simon is eventually allowed to receive a higher education in the city. There he befriends Isak, the son of a Jewish bookseller. With the dawning of the Second World War, their friendship is put to the test. And at the same time, Simon is confronted with the secret of his true identity.
