Summary
One Glass of Water
London at the time of the Spanish Succession Controversy. Queen Anne's entourage splits into two parties: One side, led by Lord Bolingbroke, urges peace talks and a quick reconciliation with France; the other side, led by the influential Duchess of Marlborough, argues for a continuation of the war. Queen Anne herself, meanwhile, is still wavering in her decision – hence, a game of intrigue unfolds at court between Bolingbroke and Marlborough, in which each wants to win the queen over to their side.
Another conflict is brewing on the human level, as both Anne and Duchess Marlborough have their sights set on young Masham, who in turn only has eyes for the maid Abigail. In this confusion of emotions, only Bolingbroke ultimately keeps track. He skilfully pulls his strings and finally achieves his noble goal: the peace treaty with France.
