Summary

Documentary about the artists Marina Abramović, Sigalit Landau, Shirin Neshat and Katharina Sieverding, in whose works their own body as well as the female body in general play a central role. Politicized by experiences of violence, war, and oppression, all four women, who come from different cultural backgrounds, develop their own unique ways of conveying the central themes of their work: the female body as a sensual entity and political space in Neshat's work, the attainment of freedom through bodily pain in Abramović's, the healing of inner wounds through art in Landau's, or, for example, the questioning of notions of national identity in Sieverding's work. The personal struggles of the artists highlighted in the film reflect the larger conflicts of our time.
