Summary
Hans Gastl, the son of a public prosecutor, grows up in Munich before the First World War. His father's strictness and false morality - amusement with "easy girls" - entangle him in contradictions with himself and his home. He seeks refuge with a prostitute who still has the strength to feel real emotions, but who does not have the strength to break away from the milieu in which she lives. Gastl finds new friends among artists. But the war turns some of them - once articulate opponents of the war - into fanatical supporters. His only companion remains the artist Sack, a poet. In the end, Hans Gastl leaves his childhood, his youth, his parents and his friends to find his own way.
