Summary
Arabian Nights: Volume 1 - The Restless One
First part of a trilogy in which director Miguel Gomes uses the structure of the "One Thousand and One Nights" folk tale collection to tell about the Portuguese economic crisis and its consequences for the people. Gomes himself plays a director who wants to turn the desolate situation into stories, yet fails trying and flees. He leaves the story telling to the beautiful Scheherazade. However, she does not tell the king stories about Sindbad or Aladdin but about the events in Portugal that took place between August 2013 and July 2014, when the country came into conflict with the EU due to its economic situation. The tales blend fact and fiction, the realistic and the poetic, fairy tales and the ludicrous.
