Der Traum ist aus
The Dream is Gone
Documentary on the history, influence and legacy of legendary German rock band "Ton Steine Scherben", whose lead singer Rio Reiser died in 1996. With their signature song "Macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht" released in 1970, the band not only anticipated Punk, but also provided the "soundtrack“ to the ongoing political protests throughout the 1970s and 1980s, thereby becoming the musical spokesmen for both the student revolt and those involved in the squatting scene. They finally distanced themselves from their image as an "agit-prop music box“ by retreating to a commune in the north Friesian countryside. Featuring live footage from various concerts, the film has original band members as well as musicians from other well-known groups like "Element of Crime" and "Die Sterne" recount the story in their own words. In doing so, the documentary also questions what is actually left today of the once fiercly political German music scene.
