Born in Magdeburg in 1942, he received training in photography at a college of higher education after which he began his career working for the American broad caster CBS. A director of several award-winning corporate films, he has collaborated with Detlef Gumm since the 1970s. Their first successful collaboration was a series of documentaries made in 1973 entitled "Alltag – Bilder von Unterwegs".
