Hildegard Knef: global superstar, style icon, grand dame of chanson, the last German diva, feminist. Strong of opinion, controversial, simultaneously an archetype and antitype of her time. As an actor, singer and writer, she revelled in international success, experienced crushing defeats and was creatively active for more than five decades. She became a public figure in Germany at the age of 20 and was never allowed to return to anonymity.
