Woodstock in Timbuktu - die Kunst des Widerstands
Can rebellion be an art? A courageous music festival in the Sahara wants attention.
The legendary Kel Tamasheq (Tuareg) are fighting for cultural survival. This ancient nomadic people, spread over five different countries for decades, is facing cultural absorption. Their challenges in times of rapid globalization seem overwhelming. But can a music festival help? Can you sing against the loss of your cultural heritage? And – will the world listen? Three inspiring bands from different regions of the Sahara raise their voices. They sing about the beauty of life in the desert, but their lyrics also reveal what cannot be talked about – a bitter fight for survival in a politically endangered area of the world. The Sahara has become the global playground for the competition over resources and power. In these turbulent times the guitars of the desert deliver an important message: We all need to work on global peace.
Director Désirée von Trotha has been friends with the Kel Tamasheq for two decades and lives in the Sahara six months out of the year.
