Biography

Wieland Speck studied German Literature, Drama and Ethnology. He started out with the then new medium video in the mid-70s and later attended the San Francisco Art Institute where he started directing short narrative films. He also worked as an actor and cinema manager. Since 1982, he has been working for the Berlin International Film Festival. He is a fiction director whose best-known film is the feature "Westler: East of the Wall" (1985), winner of numerous international awards.

He has also directed a number of shorts, including "David, Montgomery and I" (1980), released theatrically in various countries under the title "Among Men, The Sound of Fast Relief" (1983), and "Room 303" (1991). He has produced many safer sex videos for the German AIDS Foundation, and has taught at the German Film & Television Academy and the Free University in Berlin.
