Biography
Toni Servillo was born in 1959 and began his acting career without formal training. In 1977, he was co-founder of the legendary Teatro Studio in Caserta, in 1987, he helped to establish the Teatri Uniti, an acting troupe dedicated to traditional plays of the Neapolitan theatre. In 1992, he made his screen debut in the drama "Morte di un matematico napoletano", yet his breakthrough came in 2010 with the leading role in "L'uomo in più". He went on to become one of Italy's most popular screen actors.
In 2008, he was featured in two films in the Competition of the Cannes IFF: the mob drama "Gomorrha" and "Il Divo", in which he embodied Italy's former prime minister Giulio Andreotti. For his performance, he won the 2009 European Film Award and the David-di-Donatello-Award for Best Actor. The same year, he received the lifetime achievement award of the Locarno IFF. In 2010, he starred in the crime drama "Ein ruhiges Leben" (IT/D/F), which is set round Wiesbaden and was released in Germany in Spring 2012.
