Biography
Tana Gilbert was born in 1992 in Chile. She studied documentary filmmaking at the University of Chile and directed several short documentaries that were screened at international festivals. Alongside her filmmaking, she taught film courses at various Chilean universities.
In 2017, Gilbert began working on her first feature-length documentary: "Malqueridas" (2023), a German-Chilean co-production, told from the perspective of women incarcerated in a Chilean women's prison, while their young children are forced to grow up with relatives. The film premiered in 2023 at the Venice Film Festival as part of the Critics' Week section, where it won the main prize. At the Mar del Plata Festival in Argentina, it received the award for Best Film in the Altered States Competition. Further festival screenings followed. The film was released in German cinemas in March 2025.
