Sarah Judith Mettke was born in the Lausitz region in 1981 and was raised in Leipzig. After graduating from school, she made her first film experiences through internships at several stage and screen productions in Berlin. She also worked in continuity, and eventually enrolled at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie in Berlin. At the same time, she worked as a script polisher for Ufa Cinema. In 2012, her graduation film "Transpapa", about a teenage girl who seeks out her transsexual father, was invited into the competition of the Max-Ophüls-Preis film festival – and right away won the award of the prime minister of Saarland.
