Biography

Rubén Abruña began his bachelor's degree in film and television production at New York University in 1980, where his professors included Jean Rouch and George Stoney, and completed his master's degree in film studies at NYU in 1984. Abruña went on to work as a writer, editor, producer and journalist for various networks and production companies in New York, San Juan, Miami and Zurich. As an editor, he worked on the award-winning documentaries "South of Brooklyn" (US 2001) and "What about Coral? (US 2001). He was also an assistant professor at Miami Dade College from 2003 to 2012.  

As a director, Rubén Abruña made the short documentary "Fernando and Boise" (US 2010) about a nature-loving pigeon hunter and his dog, and the documentary feature "The Absent House" (US 2014) about sustainable architect Fernando Abruña Charneco.  

With the German-Swiss co-production "Holy Shit - Mit SCH#!$E die Welt retten" Abruña explores whether and how human excrement could be used to grow food and thus improve global food security. Following its premiere at the Fünf Seen Filmfestival in Germany, the film was released in German cinemas at the end of November 2023.
