Biography
Patrick Jasim worked for several years as a material and camera assistant, before he began studying camera at the German Film - and Television Academy Berlin (dffb). There he frequently worked as a cinematographer with director Moritz Krämer, for example on the Murnau Short Film Award-winning "Eat" and on the provincial study "Bube Stur" (2015), which premiered at the 2015 Berlinale in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section.
He went on to be the cinematographer on the TV mockumentary "Operation Naked" (2016), the Berlin nightlife study "Night Out" (2018), which premiered at the Thessaloniki Film Festival (Greece), and the documentary "Helmut Berger, meine Mutter und ich" ("Helmut Berger, My Mother and Me", 2018), which premiered at the 2019 Max Ophüls Festival.
In 2019, he founded the production company Tumult together with Paola Calvo and Phillip Kaminiak in Berlin. Together with Calvo, Jasim began work in the same year on his directorial debut "Luchadoras": a portrait of three female wrestlers from the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juarez, where murders of women are commonplace, and where the fighters want to counter the often violent machismo with a new image of women. The film premiered at the Austin (Texas) film festival SXWS in March 2021, due to the pandemic online. Numerous other festival screenings around the world followed. At the Hof Film Festival, "Luchdoras" won the Documentary Award; at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, it received the FIPRESCI Critics Award, the Special Jury Award and the Audience Award; at the Nottingham International Film Festival, "Luchadoras" was also awarded Best Documentary, and Calvo and Jasim won Best Director. The film's German theatrical release was in March 2022.
