Maya Unger was born in Vienna on June 6, 1995 to director and screenwriter Mirjam Unger and director and producer Antonin Svoboda. She made her debut in front of the camera at the age of nine in the Swiss-Austrian feature film "Spiele Leben" ("You Bet Your Life"), a drama about a gambling addict, directed by her father.
However, it took 12 years before Unger made her next appearance, in an episode of "SOKO Kitzbühel". In the 2016/17 season, she stood on stage with the Young Ensemble of the Vienna Burgtheater in "Wiener Brut Unlimited" and with the Young Theater of the Vienna Volkstheater in "GrenzgängerInnen". In 2017, she began her acting studies at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna.
While studying, Unger began acting regularly in television productions. She appeared in the coming-of-age drama "L'Animale" (AT 2018) and took on a guest role in the series "Vorstadtweiber" (AT 2019), directed by her mother. She played a teenager living on the streets in the "Tatort" episode "Unten", which was broadcast in December 2020, and played an artist's agent alongside Frederick Lau in the TV comedy "Der weiße Kobold" ("The White Goblin", AT 2021).
At the Austrian Film and Television Awards Romy 2021, Schulz was nominated for the audience award in the category "Favourite Newcomer Female". In the same year, she was seen in the third season of the series "Walking on Sunshine" in the role of an intern.
Maya Unger played a leading role in Bettina Blümner's coming-of-age film "Vamos a la Playa" (2022), about three friends from Germany who are confronted with themselves in an unexpected way during a trip to Cuba.
