Biography


Haile Gerima was born in Gondar/Ethiopia and studied at the Goodman Theater in Chicago and UCLA. Gerima"s works often comment on the physical, cultural and psychological dislocation of people of color during and after the era of slavery. Martin Scorsese praised him for his "Harvest: 3000 Years" which won a Silver Leopard in Locarno in 1975 and was screened in a restored version in Cannes in 2006. A selection of his films includes: "Hour Glass" (1971), "Child of Resistance" (1972), "Bush Mama" (1979), "Ashes and Ambers" (1982), "Sankofa" (1993), "Adwa" (1999), and "Teza" (2008), among others.
