Film synopsis: The feature film debut of Jessica Hausner is set in the suburbs of Vienna. Exposed to rigid education and emotional coldness, the fourteen year old Rita hopes to escape from her desolate home. But the school offers no refuge, for there the loner is constantly bullied. She wants to be close to the little asthmatic neighbor boy Fexi, whom she overstrains, and to an older driver, with whom she joylessly makes love for the first time. She finds no way out of her loneliness, and her despair finally leads to a spontaneous eruption of violence.
