Film synopsis: Against his will, Hölderlin is committed to a clinic. Seven months later, he is diagnosed as incurably demented and released. He spends the next 36 years in the care of carpenter Ernst Zimmer, while still writing poems under the name "Scardanelli".

Following "Das untergehende Vaterland" and "Hölderlin-Comics", "Scardanelli" concludes Harald Bergmann's film trilogy on German poet Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843). The film combines reenactments of scenes from the poet's later life and fictional interviews with his contemporaries, and also presents selected texts of Hölderlin accompanied by music and animations.
