Film synopsis: In the documentary "Step Across the Border" about the multi-instrumentalist Fred Frith, the free montage and observational skills of Direct Cinema respond to the improvised music of its protagonist. Like the musicians in a band, the film team sees itself as a collective working together on spontaneous artistic expression. Over two years of filming in Japan, Europe and the USA, concert recordings, interviews and everyday life on the road are captured and combined into a rhythmic journey of sound.  

"Step Across the Border" was digitized by Nicolas Humbert Filmproduktion as part of the film heritage funding program "Förderprogramm Filmerbe" (FFE) in 2020.
 
filmportal.de, the central internet platform for German cinema and a department of DFF - Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum, documents the progress and results of "Förderprogramm Filmerbe", which is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the German federal states and the German Federal Film Board. The first five minutes of feature-length films digitized with funding from the FFE are presented on filmportal.de to document the successful completion of the respective project.

Das Förderprogramm Filmerbe (FFE) von BKM, den Ländern und FFA stellt seit dem 1. Januar 2019 für den Zeitraum von zehn Jahren jährlich bis zu 10 Millionen Euro für die Digitalisierung von Kinofilmen zur Verfügung.
