In the Berchtesgaden region of the 15th century, a love affair develops between Lambert, the son of a magistrate, and Jula, a farmer's daughter. But a misunderstanding over grazing rights leads to a bitter dispute between their fathers. The peasants begin a bloody uprising against the Prince-Provost of Berchtesgaden, Pienzenauer, when Jula's father's alpine dairy burns down, Jula is mistreated, and her deaf-mute brother is murdered. A wave of violence sweeps through the Alpine foothills. It is only when the king restores peace that the lovers are able to find their way back to each other.
