Summary
Devki lives in constant conflict between her desire for emancipation and the firmly rooted traditions of Indian society. The film accompanies this courageous young Indian woman over three years and through three different phases of life: daughter, wife and mother. Devki’s greatest wish is to become a taxi driver. She wants to bring other women home safely and be financially independent. In order to reach her goal, she has to assert herself against her father, then her husband, and ultimately her father-in-law. Devki’s everyday life is governed by trying to defend her aspirations against others and to find a way to realize her dreams without losing her family. Based on Devki’s fate, the film attempts to explain the difficulties an Indian woman faces when trying to free herself from traditional role models.
