Summary

Poland, 1988. Jerzy, who lives in Warsaw, has only one goal in mind: to leave his homeland, which seems to offer him no prospects. America is his dream destination, but for now Jerzy would be content with West Berlin. Once there, however, life turns out to be far less promising than expected. Jerzy has to keep his head above water with odd jobs that are sometimes more, sometimes less legal. One day he falls in love with the Polish woman Ewa, whom he had already met in Warsaw and who now also lives in Berlin. She, too, had imagined life in the West differently. One day she suddenly disappears without leaving an address. Jerzy, on the other hand, has not yet given up his dream of America. He finances illegal immigration papers with crooked deals - in America, he is sure, everything will be better.
