Über Leben in Demmin

Deutschland 2014-2017 Dokumentarfilm

Summary

Documentary about the city of Demmin in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, where an almost unbelievable tragedy occurred in the finals days of WWII: Fearing the approaching Red Army and brutal revenge at the hands of the Soviet soldiers, about 900 inhabitants – women, men, children – committed suicide. To this day, this tragedy is perfidiously exploited by right-wing extremists and Neo-Nazis, who every year on May 8 (the official day of remembrance for Germany's liberation from fascism) march through Demmin. The film also observes this ritual, but foremost it reflects upon the town's history by presenting contemporary witnesses and relatives of victims, many of whom talk openly about the tragic events for the first time.
