Seelische Konstruktionen

Deutschland 1926-1930 Animationsfilm

Summary

"Spiritual Constructions", subtitled "I am feeling dizzy, as if the whole world was drunk", is a silhouette animation film produced by Oskar Fischinger. Fischinger used a custom technique, filming a plate of frosted glass that was lighted from below from an upright position. On top of the glass he rolled out a mass of kaolin - a mixture of wax and clay - and stamped or cut out silhouetted figures.

The film tells of two men getting drunk at a bar, fighting with each other and eventually stumbling home to bed. The story is presented in an experimental form, with for instance the leg of one of the men getting longer and thicker as he kicks the other, or a man being choked shrinking to a thin, barely visible line. On the way home, the men hallucinate and encounter several obstacles, which are perceived as "living" opponents. To stress the character′s loss of orientation, Fischinger occasionally cut one or more individual shots from other scenes into the current scene. Lotte Reiniger′s silhouette animation "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" served as an inspiration to Fischinger.
