Summary
Based on a true story: In 1860, the French lawyer Orélie Antoine de Tounens sets out for South America, where he plans to found the Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia in an area inhabited by the quarreling Mapuche tribe. His guide Juan Bautista Rosales accompanies him through the jungle. De Tounens is obsessed with the idea of uniting the Mapuche tribe and making them crown himself the king of his new kingdom. For this purpose, he has a flag, a custom made constitution and self-embossed coins in his luggage. However, de Tounens is captured by the Chilean army, which is in conflict with the Mapuche, and has to testify in court about his plans.
