Summary
Lore was six years old when her mother was deported to Auschwitz. She herself survived the Holocaust in hiding, but did not emerge unscathed from the experience; the traumas are deep-seated and continue to shape her life to this day - as well as that of her daughter, Kim. She has never spoken to her daughter about her own mother or the hiding place where she survived, nor about her son Tom, who took his own life. Kim, on the other hand, fights every day for a piece of normalcy - and she finally wants to talk to her mother about her childhood, about Tom, about the damaged lives of both of them, and about a mother-daughter relationship that could never really be lived.
