Summary
Animal shelter director Birgit Singer has a lot on her plate: The mayor wants to close the shelter, her little daughter is teased at kindergarten because she stutters, and her husband is a pain in the neck because he spends all his time writing his dissertation. There is also a crisis with her Jewish in-laws, and reconciliation seems a long way off when Birgit takes on the care of a parrot that at first seems like the perfect pet for her daughter, but then starts screeching Nazi slogans. Torn between political correctness, love of animals, and the realities of German life, Birgit has had enough when she makes the headlines and loses her job.
