Summary
Herr Puntila and His Servant Matti
Adaptation of Bertolt Brecht′s anti-capitalistic play. Estate owner Puntila can nice and charming but only when he is drunk. Then, he even treats his fellow men like humans. But when he is sober, he becomes moody and obnoxious. His driver Matti is often a victim of Puntila′s foul moods. Puntila wants his daughter Eva to marry an aristocrat although Eva herself is not sure about her father′s marriage plans. Puntila also notices that the aristocrat is not suited to marry Eva and – when he is drunk again – suggests Eva to marry Matti. But the differences between him and his driver seem to be insurmountable.
Other adapatations of the play: Herra Puntila ja hänen renkinsä Matti, Sweden/Finland, 1979, directed by Ralf Långbacka; German TV version (1996), directed by Rolf Hädrich.
