Summary
Film Study
A moving picture by Hans Richter, a pioneer of Germany’s absolute film movement, who applied the principles of composition used by modern art to film. His rhythmic montage combines abstract, animated shapes with actual bodies, glass eyes, and human faces. The non-linear series of images results in a calculated contrast between light and dark, whereby the circles, squares, rectangles, and stripes “grow or disappear, jump or glide in a planned rhythm” according to Richter’s intentions.
