Summary
Faust - A German Folk-Tale
Based on elements of the Goethe classic, Faust tells the story of the scholar of the same name, who is led into temptation by Mephisto. Mephisto had maintained in an argument with the archangel Gabriel that he could bring every human from following the path of God.
In order to tempt the old Faust, Mephisto has the land visited by the plague; Faust asks the devil for advice when the dying people beseech the scholar to help as he receives no help from God despite all of his prayers. In order to win him over, Mephisto promises Faust eternal youth and all the treasures of this world. Faust agrees to the pact and signs away his soul to the devil. From now on, Mephisto must fulfil his every wish. When Mephisto and Faust return to the latter′s home town one day, Faust falls in love with the innocent and pure Gretchen. He climbs into Gretchen′s room to seduce her. Gretchen′s mother discovers Faust with her daughter and dies of the shame. Gretchen, who is then treated like an outcast by her community, gives birth all alone in the winter. When the child dies in the cold, she is condemned to death at the stake. Faust hears of her impending fate, curses the eternal youth and sets off to ask Gretchen for forgiveness...
