District Administrator Stroganoff is sent to a small Russian border town. He is to convict a gang of smugglers led by the charismatic Kolokotronski, a respected Polish nobleman. During a party, the Pole hypnotizes Serafine, the district administrator's beautiful wife, with whom Yuri Durnovo, a lieutenant of the border guard, is also in love. Forced to submit to the will of a stranger, Serafine meets up with the Pole. He shoots the police officer who is watching the rendezvous, and when Serafine confesses everything to her husband, he commits suicide. The government now commissions State Councillor Ivan Piotrovich to investigate. He too was once in love with Serafine and now turns out to be the son of the old lock keeper Wnuk, who was thought to have vanished, but still has a score to settle with the Pole. When the latter realizes that the circle is closing around him, he executes himself.
