Summary
Long-term observation about the construction of the Carolingian monastery town Meßkirch, a modern building project that wants to construct an early medieval cloister based on the historical plans of the St. Gallen monastery. In 2012 construction started near the small town of Meßkirch in Baden-Württemberg, where a group of permanently employed builders together with volunteers are expected to build houses, workshops and the monastery over a period of 40 years using only contemporary tools and aids. The film shows the challenges this ambitious project is facing, such as the extraction of building materials and their transport as well as construction according to methods of the 9th century, for which, however, hardly any plans or records exist. The financing of the large-scale project and the pressure to generate income through guided tours for visitors is also addressed. Supporters, workers, scientists and local residents have their say.
