Mañana al mar
Imagine the beach of Barcelona in winter. A deserted place, sometimes tough-winded, on the edge of the vibrating city, an open plane to the sea. Waves are coming and going. As are these few citizens, maybe called upon by the waves. Or is it them, who render visible something untimely and eternal in this fluid flux and reflux?
There is José, nearly 90, jogging through the sand and there is Paulina, an elderly lady, singing Cuban boleros from her youth while she swims in the icy sea, her crutch waiting outside. Furthermore we encounter Antonio, around 80, who scrutinizes the ocean from his self-built cemented throne on top of the coast′s jagged rocks. The three of them, on the edge of life, are part of an elderly community, whose passion is to return every morning to the sea.
The film follows these lovely, humorous and utterly vivid individualists and thus becomes accomplice to their loves and lives, while they are challenging wind, weather and time. Consequently, the camera never leaves the beach, which appears to be their natural environment, a stage for an almost ritual encounter with the sea, whose rhythm determines the film.
"This funny, entertaining and patient work made us fall in love with these wonderful beach-philosophers and we are looking forward, that their stories will find their way into cinemas." (Jury of the Ohpuels Festival Saarbruecken)
