Germany, World War I: To encourage the soldiers at the front, girls from home regularly send them gifts of love. Wendelin Liebreich, wounded in battle, also receives regular mail from an unknown woman. The small package with the beautiful love letter gives him strength and confidence. The tender words in the letter make him fall in love with the woman and he decides to visit her when he comes to Berlin. When he meets her, however, he discovers that the donor is not a young lady, as he had hoped, but a schoolgirl. He is touched by the child's kindness, is invited to have cocoa with her, and meets her family, from whom he receives numerous gifts.
