Cheerful entertainment in a circus and small-town milieu: The quiet life of a small provincial town is shaken up when the respected garden gnome manufacturer Albert Oberholzer's four brothers and their wives arrive for his fiftieth birthday, including Alexander, who ran away from home twenty years ago and is now director of a traveling circus. Oberholzer's daughter Anna is so fascinated by the colorful circus life and her uncle, the ringmaster, that she wants to leave with him, much to the displeasure of his beautiful wife, Iduna. Eventually, Anna realizes that her true love is Robert, a young gardener. The circus gives a big farewell performance and moves on. One of the Oberholzer brothers gives up his bourgeois life and joins the circus as a clown.
