Born in Freudenstadt, in the Black Forest, in 1969. Drama and cinema studies in Bremen and Berlin. BFA from New York University"s Tisch School of the Arts in Film and TV. Work as a theatre director and video artist in the USA and Germany. He has been making short films and videos since 1994, many of which have screened at festivals like Oberhausen, São Paulo and South By Southwest. "If One Thing Matters - A Film About Wolfgang Tillmans" is Heiko Kalmbach"s first long-format documentary.
