Biography
Born in Paris on 18.8.1933, he grew up in Cracow and, after 1941, lived in the ghetto there. He made his directorial debut in 1962, received a Silver Bear for "Repulsion" in 1965 and a Golden Bear in 1966 for "Cul-de-Sac". He moved to the USA in 1968 where his films "The Fearless Vampire Killers" and Rosemary"s Baby" were successful. In 1975 he won a Golden Globe for "Chinatown" and in 2002 the Golden Palm for "The Pianist", which also won an Oscar in 2003. He received the European Film Award for his life’s work in 2006.
