Verliebt, Verlobt, Verloren
In 1952, the North Korean regime deployed its best students to other socialist countries, where they were to receive expert training to help the rebuilding of their war-devastated country. Many of the students ended up in the German Democratic Republic, where they not only went to university, but often also fell in love with local women with whom they had children. Alas, the new-founded families didn't last long: In the early 1960s, the Korean men were ordered home and were forced to leave their wives and kids behind. The documentary by Sung-Hyung Cho portrays some of the people who were left behind and has them speak about their experiences.
